Sun Safety Tips For Dogs

We all love soaking up the sunshine, and so do our pups! But just like us, dogs can suffer from sunburn, dehydration, and heat exhaustion if they’re not properly protected. So, before you and your four-legged bestie hit the great outdoors, let’s talk about some easy ways to keep them safe in the sun.

Paws Off the Hot Pavement: Ever walked barefoot on a scorching pavement? Ouch! Your pup’s paws are just as sensitive, and hot surfaces can burn them quickly. A simple rule: if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws. Stick to grassy areas, head out for walks in the early morning or late evening, or invest in dog booties for extra protection.

Shade is Your Best Friend: Dogs can overheat fast, especially breeds with thick coats or flat faces (we’re looking at you, Frenchies and Pugs!). Make sure your pup has access to shade whenever they’re outside—under a tree, a canopy, or even a stylish doggy sun tent. And if you’re at the beach, bring an umbrella so they can chill in the shade while you soak up the rays.

Sunscreen (Yes, for Dogs!): Believe it or not, dogs can get sunburnt too—especially those with short fur or light-coloured coats. Apply a pet-safe sunscreen to exposed areas like their nose, ears, and belly. Human sunscreen is a no-go as it contains ingredients that can be toxic to dogs. Look for a dog-specific SPF to keep them sun-safe.

Stay Hydrated: Heat + exercise = a very thirsty pup! Always bring plenty of fresh water when heading out with your dog. Collapsible water bowls are a great on-the-go option. Keep an eye out for signs of dehydration like excessive panting, dry gums, or lethargy, and if in doubt, take a water break!

Know the Signs of Overheating: Heatstroke is serious business. If your dog is excessively panting, drooling, struggling to breathe, or acting unusually tired, they may be overheating. Move them to a cool spot, offer water, and use a damp towel to help cool them down. If symptoms persist, get them to a vet ASAP.

Cooling Gear for the Win: From cooling mats to doggy bandanas soaked in water, there are plenty of ways to keep your pup cool on hot days. You can even freeze dog-safe treats (like frozen banana slices or Field Day’s omega-boosting meal topper mixed with water) for a refreshing snack.

Final Thoughts

Sunshine and fresh air are great for you and your pup, but safety comes first! With a little prep, you can enjoy the outdoors together without worrying about overheating or sunburn. Stay cool, stay hydrated, and have a pawsome time in the sun!
